    APERC Statement
Global Automotive Steering Group Removes OPEs from Industry List
    April 19, 2005

Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), as a family, and octylphenol ethoxylates (OPEs), specifically, were completely removed from the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL) due to comments submitted by APERC to the Global Automotive Steering Group. The intent of the GADSL is to replace individual automotive company and chemical lists. The GADSL only covers substances that are expected to be present in a material or part that remains in a vehicle at point of sale.

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) will remain on the list because of the EU Marketing and Use Directive affecting their use in the EU. However, they will be listed as "Declarable" substances (D) rather than "Prohibited" substances (P). This means that suppliers would have to reveal the presence of NPEs at levels of 0.1% or more in the parts or materials that they sell to the auto manufacturers so that a determination can be made regarding whether their presence will affect the recycling/disposal of the automobile.

For more information on the GADSL go to: http://www.gadsl.org/.
