APE RESEARCH COUNCIL ISSUES WHITE PAPER
Answers Basic Questions on Safety of APs, APEs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Alkylphenols & Ethoxylates Research Council today issued a white paper that reviews basic questions about potential health and environmental effects of alkylphenols (APs) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs). The paper concludes that the substances do not pose a significant ecological risk or cause adverse human health effects.
Based on up-to-date research, the white paper provides a straightforward explanation of issues related to biodegradation, environmental monitoring, aquatic effects and recent hypotheses related to the endocrine system. It answers basic questions such as "What happens to alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates if they reach the environment?" "Do they affect the endocrine system and thereby pose potential health risks?"
Joe Fette of Dover Chemical, chairman of the APE Research Council, said, "One of the Council's primary functions is to make information on the environmental safety of our products more accessible. This white paper pulls together significant research on APs and APEs in a non-technical format and gives the reader a solid understanding of the science and safety of these products."
APEs play an important role in a number of industrial applications, including pulp and paper, textiles, coatings, agricultural pesticides, lube oils and fuels, metals, as well as industrial, institutional and household cleaning products.
