APE RESEARCH COUNCIL LAUNCHED

Fourteen major corporations that manufacture, process or use alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE) have formed the APE Research Council to develop and communicate a scientifically sound understanding of the health and environmental profile of their products.

In addition to conducting new research, the APE Research Council will focus on educational efforts to improve understanding of existing research findings for the benefit of users, regulators and other interested parties.

APEs play an important role in a number of industrial applications, including pulp and paper, textiles, coatings, agricultural pesticides, lube oils and fuels, metals, as well as industrial, institutional and household cleaning products.

Nancy Deibler of Union Carbide Corporation, elected first chairperson of the APE Research Council, said, "This is a very positive step for all APE producers and our customers. We expect to have an active research program as well as step up our efforts to reach out to various audiences and provide credible information on the safety of APEs."

Deibler continued, "We created the APE Research Council because our mission has expanded well beyond the original purpose of the APE Panel of the Chemical Manufacturers Association, our predecessor organization. The APE Panel originally was created to respond to data needs of the EPA. This new, separate APE Research Council provides a stronger identity to make it easier to reach out to APE users and other interested parties."

The Council will conduct technical seminars for industry and regulators and partner with academic institutions in the development of new information. It will issue technical bulletins and undertake the research and regulatory functions of the former APE Panel.

The new APE Research Council will be based in Washington, DC. It will be managed by RegNet Environmental Services, a consulting firm specializing in technical and regulatory issues. Its educational and publications program will be managed by John Adams Associates Inc. and legal counsel will be provided by Latham and Watkins.
